If you aren't familiar with who the Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) are, let us be the first to introduce you to this fantastic organization!  First, we're a group who's very proud of our heritage and our heroes.  We exist so that the legacy of these heroes are known to the current and all future generations and that people may understand the motives that animated The Southern Cause.

Maybe you've heard the old saying, 'It's About Heritage... Not Hate'.   That is an absolute truth.  So, if any misconceptions or misunderstandings exist that you may have heard or read, please dismiss them, and allow us to help you learn the truth...not simply the revisionist history that has been propelled within our society for well over a century.

The SCV is an international, non-profit historical heritage society with almost 30,000 members.  Organized at Richmond, Virginia in 1896, the SCV continues to be dedicated to preserving the true history of the Confederacy. We are a patriotic, and non-political organization dedicated to ensuring that the 1861-1865 period is preserved for all of time.

The SCV is the direct heir of the United Confederate Veterans, and is the oldest hereditary organization for male descendents of Confederate soldiers.  We are proud of who we are, where we come from, and who our ancestors are.  So much so, that we will never be ashamed, misled, made to feel guilty or be confused of these facts!

Membership in the Sons of Confederate Veterans is open to all male descendants of any veteran who served honorably in the Confederate armed forces.  To start the investigation of your ancestors, and see if you have 'Rebel' blood running through your veins, please feel free to visit the SCV's main site's Genealogy Assistance Page.

Locally, we are known as the Captain James J. McAlester Camp #775 of the Sons of Confederate Veterans located in McAlester, OK.  If you do not live in the McAlester/Henryetta area, don't fret, we have a place for you too!  Within the state of Oklahoma, the SCV has several local organizations, known as Camps.  Our Camps engage in a variety of activities and special projects such as: sponsoring living history demonstrations in schools; reenactments; marking Confederate graves; and preserving historical sites.  Oklahoma has a very proud history and has become known as 'Little Dixie'.  As you are probably aware, Oklahoma was formerly known as the Indian Territory, and has a rich Confederate history with direct connections to the Confederacy.  In fact, did you know that all five of the "Civilized Tribes" (Cherokee, Creek, Seminole, Choctaw, and Chickasaw) officially allied with the Confederate States of America and fought in the War for Southern Independence?  For instance, Stand Watie, the famous Cherokee Confederate leader, was the only American Indian, on either side, to rise to a Brigadier General's rank during the War.
